Stephen Gill – 22.963 Steps, Bristol

Stephen Gill was born in Bristol, UK and is currently living in Hackney, London. Whilst producing some research for a project I am involved with I became aware of his series 22.963 Steps, Bristol and thought it would be a good way to start to the week. I really enjoy how the images in this series have been taken in places that you may recognise (if you have visited Bristol) such as the image above taken in College Green however by focusing on moments that you may of ignored on your daily routine you are offered a different perspective on a place you may be familiar with.
“Stephen Gill’s photographs have all the naïve gusto of the field studies series of old. Mercifully lacking in sarcasm and malevolent irony, they are also wise and modern and beautifully laden with tiny, understated details about the way we live today.”

Stephen Gill also founded his imprint Nobody in 2005 in order to exercise maximum control over the publication process of his books.
His intention was to make books at one with their content rather than just a shell to house photographs. Experimentation with materials, and a hands-on, tactile approach to maquette making led, in many cases, to his books having an individual, unique presence. This could come in the form of spray paint, or a rubber stamp, sometimes entire books are manufactured and assembled by hand in his Hackney studio.
Stephen Gill has multiple other projects displayed on his online portfolio and would definitely recommend taking a look.
