Mariya Ustymenko – Kiev Bound

August 12, 2012

These photographs were sent to us from visual artist Mariya Ustymenko and come from a body of work titled ‘Kiev Bound’…shot during her teens and twenties in her native city of Kiev, her work deals with a personal perception of her surroundings and circumstances and reflects on her individual path of growing up; when discussing her work she stated -

” Faulty, blurry and grainy, departing far from the traditional standards of black and white photography, they convey a state of mind rather than document a certain place or time. Dark as they may appear at a first glance, they provide escape from the conformity generated by fashion and sealed by social status. Beauty and ugliness are beyond the equation here. The story, I guess, is about the humanity of its characters – dogs, people and buildings.”
