Damiano Nava

Damiano Nava is a 29 year old photographer originally from Northern Italy.
Although he studied literature and philosophy at college, Damianno has been shooting photographs since he was 19, when discussing his work he told us:
“Even as a child, I always appreciated the work of artists who use their camera as a diary, such as: Nan Goldin, Araki, Wolfgang Tillmans, and others…
So I started my journal, but focused only on people. I always tried to not simply repeat what they had already done with great skill, but find my own style. My mother’s brother is a naive\naif painter and I grew up surrounded by his portraits and I think that somehow his style has influenced my photography.”
The Following images come from the series of work ‘From My Friendly Neighborhood’

“In October 2009 I moved to Berlin. It was right chance to start a new chapter of my diary.
Berlin is a city which is full of young people and rich in creative energy.
Nonetheless I had difficulties in meeting people of my generation who might be interested in being photographed. I neither spoke nor understood German and I did not belong to a specific environment such as the university one.
I decided to exploit Internet editing an advertisement on Craigslist and Exberliner: “Hi everyone, I’m looking for people for my new photographic series. If you live in Berlin and interested, please contact me. Damiano”.
This advertisement has remained on the web for two years
Many people answered me, someone asked for money (that I do not offer), while others were simply curious about the opportunity that I was offering.
I received about a thousand e-mails, met hundred people and then I took pictures of the few who felt at ease with me.”
